• A search engine is a tool that allows a user to enter keywords and
retrieve information on websites contained in its catalogue or database

• Search engine tools like Google are run by search engine software that
allows the database to be searched.

Features of Search Engine

• A true search engine is an automated software program that moves
around the Web collecting Webpages to include in its catalogue or

• It searches when an user requests information from a search engine;
not the entire Web.

• Each search engine has its own catalogue or database of collected
Webpages, so you will get different results/hits by using different search

Types of Search Engines

There are three main types of search engine tools:

• Search directories or indexes
• Hybrid search engines
• Meta search engines

All of these tools are often referred to as search engines

Multiple (Meta) Search Engines

• A Meta search engine is a tool that helps to locate information available
via the WWW.

• It provide a single interface that enables users to search many different
search engines, indexes and databases.

• Thus Meta search engines are capable of searching several search
engine databases at once.

The Three Parts of a Search Engine

• Spider, crawler or robot
• Index, catalogue or database
• Search engine software

Part One: The Spider

• The first part of a search engine is called the spider. The spider
(sometimes called a crawler or robot) is a program that moves around
the World Wide Web visiting websites.

• It reads the webpages it finds and follows the links further down into
the website.

• The spider returns from time to time and checks for changes. The pages that it finds are placed into the catalogue.

Part Two: The Index

• The second part of a search engine is called the index, catalogue, or database. This index contains a copy of each page that was collected by the spider.

• A speared page must be indexed to become a search result.

Part Three: Search Engine Software

When a user requests keywords from a search engine, the search
engine software sifts through all the indexed pages to find matching
keywords, then returns the results/hits to the user.

Search Engine: an effective tool for exploring the Internet


The Internet has become the largest source of information. Today, millions of Websites exist and this number continuous to grow.

In their annual review (2002) of the World Wide Web, researchers at OCLC have determined that the Web now contains about 9 million unique sites. “The Web continues to grow at a substantial rate”, said Ed O’Neill, manager of the OCLC Web Characterization Project.

According to another survey done by Net craft in August 2006, there are
92,615,362 sites (92 million) and this is an increase of 4.4 million sites (4.8%) from the July, 2006 survey.

The end user uses the Internet heavily in accessing information in their day to day needs since the Internet is the biggest repository of knowledge in the
history of mankind. Thus the Internet has become the world’s widely accessed information source and Websites are added, updated, and obsolete daily.

Therefore, “Finding the right information at the right time” is the challenge in the Internet age. Hence there is a need for a more effective way of retrieving information on the Internet.

There are three ways of finding information on the Internet.

1. Guessing the URL (Uniform Resource Locater)
2. Using a Search engine
3. Using a Subject Directory or a Subject Gateways

If the URL (Uniform Resource Locater) is known, it can be typed in the
Internet browsers’ (Example: Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc.)
address bar and can be accessed the Website soon.

Otherwise use directories (Yahoo!, dmoz, LookSmart) for broad, general
topics. Subject directories select and classify resources into subject categories and subcategories. Some include reviews and/or ratings which can be accessed by keyword search or by browsing the classifications.

A subject gateway can be defined as a facility that allows easier access to
network-based resources in a defined subject area. The simplest types of
subject gateways are sets of Web pages containing lists of links to resources. The resources accessible through these gateways are reviewed, selected, evaluated and catalogued by information professionals or subject experts.
