Unit 2: Creating A New Workbook

  • Creating a New File of Excel Workbook:

Click Start Menu → Microsoft Office → Select Excel → And Here you begun.

Select New Under Available Templates, click Blank Workbook and then click Create Button or alternatively press Ctrl + O keys together.

  • Typing the data:

Can directly or manually type the figures of content in numerical or alphabetical formats in excel cell value. Excel cell value accepts the data of normal or formulated once also in it. To display a list of the sheets in the workbook right click a tab scrolling button to display the menu. The name box is at the left end of the formula bar, it identifies the selected cell, chart item or drawing item. Easy formulas and complex with compound formulas are accepted with logical conditions in Microsoft Excel, and also checks out with the spelling of the data consistency. An excel workbook file can hold any number of worksheets and each worksheet is made up of 17 billion cells. A cell can hold any of the three basic types of data Numerical, Text and A Formula. A worksheet can also hold charts, diagrams, pictures, buttons, and other objects. These objects aren’t contained in cells. Instead, they reside on the worksheet’s draw layer, which is an invisible layer on top of each worksheets of Excel File.

  • Saving A File:

Excel has two commands for saving workbooks. Save command used to save an existing workbook; Save as command used to save the workbook when you save it for the first time or save the workbook under a new name. To save for the first time do this → click file tab → save or save as → give the name of the file → give the type of the file → click save button. The Excel saving format of extension is .xlsx

  • Closing the File:

When you finish using worksheet or chart, you close its window. If you have made any changes since the last time you saved the workbook, Excel displays an alert dialog box asking whether you want to save your work before closing. The window closes provide no change has been made to the workbook since it was saved last. If you have made changes to the workbook since the last save, the alert dialog box appears. In the dialog box, choose Don’t save if you do not want to save a changed version of the file, or choose save if you do want to save changes. To quit the excel for a while click the close button (x) in the top-right corner or press Alt + F4 or double click the control icon at the left of the title bar. When all workbooks are closed, Excel window closes and the application is terminated.

  • Printing The Data or File:

The simplest way to print any opened worksheet is to choose Print option from the backstage view or alternatively, click the Print Preview & Print button from Quick Access Toolbar. In Excel you can print entire or partial worksheets and workbooks, one at a time, or several at once. And if the data that you want to print is in a Microsoft Excel Table; you can also print just the Excel table by settling the print area. You can also print a workbook to a file instead of to a printer. This is useful when you need to print the workbook on a different type of printer from the one that you originally used to print it.
